The product reads from a buffer using buffer access mechanisms such as indexes or pointers that reference memory locations after the targeted buffer. Automated static analysis, commonly referred to as Static Application Security Testing (SAST), can find some instances of this weakness by analyzing source code (or binary/compiled code) without having to execute it. Typically, this is done by building a model of data flow and control flow, then searching for potentially-vulnerable patterns that connect "sources" (origins of input) with "sinks" (destinations where the data interacts with external components, a lower layer such as the OS, etc.) Text editor has out-of-bounds read past end of line while indenting C code Chain: "Heartbleed" bug receives an inconsistent length parameter (CWE-130) enabling an out-of-bounds read (CWE-126), returning memory that could include private cryptographic keys and other sensitive data. Chain: product does not handle when an input string is not NULL terminated, leading to buffer over-read or heap-based buffer overflow.
